Electrical/Controls Engineer

 

Summary  

Industrial Tool Inc. is seeking an Automation Controls Engineer to work within our Automation Team to support advanced automation projects. This person will work to define new manufacturing technologies, develop the technology with our mechanical design group, develop and install the control architecture, and provide troubleshooting. This includes electrical/controls design, programming, debug of hardware and software, installation, and operator training. The ideal candidate for this position will be able to operate with minimum oversight and have a full understanding of controls engineering with the ability to solve most problems on their own.

 

This person is an experienced automation software programmer and control system designer, experienced in multiple software platforms including but not limited to Allen Bradley Control Systems, Robotics, and Vision Systems. Experienced with various hardware devices (PLCs, motion controllers, vision systems, I/O systems, and field devices typically found on automated machinery), and the techniques required for interface, communication, and control.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop work cells and automation that ensure quality and optimize manufacturing efficiency.
  • Design machine control systems using AutoCAD Electrical that allows for effective control system implementation. Generate schematics, I/O list, BOMs for electrical build.
  • Program and prove-out the cell or machine to meet/exceed the scope of the project and meet all customer requirements.
  • Experience desired:
    • Allen Bradley PLC and HMI controls experience – Rockwell Automation Studio 5000
    • Servo Motion – Rockwell Automation Kinetix
    • Machine Vision & Vision-guided motion – Keyence & Fanuc iRVision
    • Thorough experience with PLC programming logic and motion control
    • 6-axis FANUC robots
    • Industrial networking protocols: Ethernet I/P, Modbus TCP
    • Industrial sensors, servo presses, laser marking equipment
  • Lead custom automation projects including cost estimates, project development and schedule.
  • Conduct Safety Risk Assessments for new/custom equipment and automation cells.
  • Proficiency in electronic, pneumatic, and mechanical design, repair, and troubleshooting.
  • Help with equipment design, and recommendation of sensors and safeguarding.
  • Troubleshoot issues with automated equipment and develop solutions when issues arise.
  • Research and implement new technology to continuously improve.

 

Qualifications:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering or similar.
  • 5 years of Electrical Engineering/Controls
  • Must have intimate knowledge of AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Must have basic knowledge of the relationship of parts in an assembly.
  • Must be able to understand mechanical and software needs and integrate those needs into electrical designs.
  • Must have applicable knowledge of the UL 508A, NEC, NFPA 79, and CE code.
  • Must have strong programming skills.
  • Must have experience with the specification and programming of vision systems.
  • Must have intimate knowledge and experience with analog and digital inputs and outputs.
  • Must have experience and knowledge in applying basic mathematics, trigonometry, and algebra skills.
  • Must have intimate knowledge of servomotors, stepper motors, DC motors, and AC motors and their associated motion controllers.
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously to budget and schedule.
  • Be willing to roll up sleeves and support the requirements of the team as a leader and doer (lead by example).
  • Experience in the design of machining systems incorporating both standard and custom-built m

Application Engineer

 

Summary

Industrial Tool, Inc. (ITI) is seeking an Application Engineer to work within our Engineering Team to support advanced machining and automation projects. This person will work to develop new manufacturing processes with our mechanical design team and implement with a high level of accuracy.  ITI is an industry leader in providing full “Turnkey Solutions” for a very diverse customer base.  Application Engineers at ITI are critical to defining the parameters and scale of a project in the quoting stage of a project by building a machining time study specific to the customers part(s). This includes identifying a workholding scheme, understanding critical geometric tolerancing of the parts, the necessary cutting tool package, and specifying the required machine tool to be used (including machine options).  Once a project becomes active the Application Engineer’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, working with the mechanical engineer to understand fixture access requirements, finalize a cutting tool package, order necessary tools, build tools, program tool paths, cut and measure/qualify first article parts, runoff the system, and install/runoff/training onsite at the customers facility.

  • Prepare time studies and turnkey proposals.
  • Assist in the integration of Engineering Services, such as machine tool and automation projects.
  • Manage the research and design of fixtures and tooling.
  • Supervise the modification of fixtures and tooling as required.
  • Identify and purchase commercial items.
  • Programming of CNC machines.
  • Prepare machine for customer runoff.
  • Travel to customer sites for support and turnkey runoffs.
  • Proven skills and knowledge in a variety of CNC applications and machines. Keeps up to date on the latest in machining and tooling technology.
  • Lead development projects to enhance our products offered.
  • Provide phone support to customers, both internal and external.
  • Report to management on any progress, delays or issues and provide an action plan to resolve.
  • Generate and maintain documentation for each area of responsibility listed above.
  • All other duties as required to support the team and organization.

 

Qualifications:

  • BS in Engineering or similar preferred.

Mechanical Engineer

 

Primary Responsibilities 

This position serves as the liaison between Industrial Tool, Inc., ITI production build and our customer(s) for design and build of special application machines, robotic systems and fixtures.  The custom solution was sold by our sales team with cross-functional support in building out the quote.  It is very important for the engineer to understand the detail of what is the expectation for a deliverable in terms of customer specifications, function, cost and delivery(timing).  The engineer should be cognizant of the engineering hours as well as build and purchase cost ultimately having significant influence and control of the profitability of the sale.

 

When a customer places an order for a specialized/application machine and fixtures often in conjunction with automation (robotics), it will be assigned to a team of engineers to design to meet, or exceed, the customer specifications.  The design must typically be signed off by the customer and it is the lead design engineer responsibility to coordinate across the team to bring the technical solution ultimately obtaining the customer signature of approval.  Once approved by the customer, a detailed bill of material should be created sufficient to support procurement of components to order parts.  The detail design needs to also be sufficiently detailed to allow our production machining team and mechanical build team to fabricate and assemble parts into the final application.

 

Throughout the design and build process, it is the engineers responsibility to keep the documentation to the latest level for ITI records and providing the customer with sufficient information to maintain the machines and conduct references as needed.  This pertains to mechanical, electrical and automation (robotics mostly).

 

The engineer must work effectively and efficiently with the purchasing manager and with the production team on any issues or concerns that arise providing supportable solutions on a timely basis.

 

The engineer should not make changes to the design without ensuring ITI gets appropriately compensated for the changes once accepted by customer/ITI.

 

Ensures customer satisfaction of information for design and parts specification solutions by managing the details of cost, timing and business needs.  This position must bring customer satisfaction by being responsive and showing appropriate sensitivity to the customer needs yet not compromising ITI business needs.

 

This position is responsible to prepare the final documentation and spare parts list for the product shipped to the customer.  This position will often recommend supportable alternatives to satisfy the customer needs and requirements.

 

This position requires teamwork, communications and interaction with sales, engineering, production, purchasing and other members of cross-functional teams focused on the delivery of new and existing products.  The communication called upon will be for appropriate balance, excellent written and verbal communications and responsiveness as dictated by the situation.

 

This position reports to the Engineering Manager.  The position is a key staff, non-management role within the engineering team.

Position Expectations

  • Proven skills and knowledge in a tool and die industry
  • Capability to run manual machines, grinders, saws, lathes
  • Experience and understanding tool steel material and heat treating
  • Experience with welding and grinding a variety of materials
  • Capable to perform part inspection and experience with hand gages/micrometers
  • Proven capability to read, interpret blue prints
  • Experience with a wide variety of cutting tools
  • Mechanical understanding of electrical systems
  • Experience building hydraulic systems and proper hose and fitting selection
  • Fabrication and assembly experience
  • Provide support to Production and CNC team.  Timely resolution to questions and issues.
  • Understanding of shop hardware and proper selection
  • Field Service experience is preferred
  • Experience operating a press brake machine
  • Cost Management – Cognizant of machining hours and material cost to manage job accordingly
